I have been studying the Mediterranean diet for years and just recently wrapped up a research project on it- so it’s on my mind, to say the least! It’s not a diet but more of a healthy lifestyle that works.
For those of you who may not be familiar with it, the Mediterranean diet is a way of eating based on the traditional cuisines of countries that border the Mediterranean Sea. The foundation of the diet is plant-based foods, such as whole grains, vegetables, legumes, fruits, and nuts. Fish, seafood, dairy, and poultry are included in moderation. Red meat and sweets are eaten occasionally. All right up my alley!
It’s been around for a long time, and research has consistently shown that the Mediterranean diet effectively reduces chronic diseases, some cancers, and symptoms of depression. Doctors often prescribe the Mediterranean diet to treat these issues.
What’s cool is that it’s flexible and not focused on calorie counting. Most people think the Mediterranean diet is focused on only Mediterranean foods, expensive, and time-consuming- all not true.
