The Girl Dinner Trend– 534 million views.
The list goes on and on. I hate to break it to you, but your unlimited access to health and wellness information may sabotage your efforts to stay healthy. With over 4,000 trending diets and wellness hacks, it’s easy to get confused. That’s a lot of noise vying for your attention! I get it- sometimes, this information can spark inspiration or motivation to try something new, but information overload may be risky and hinder your progress. So, how can you navigate the sea of health and wellness advice and figure out what truly works?
Why is Information Overload Detrimental?
The problem with being overserved is that not everything you come across is accurate. There’s a lot of misinformation floating around, especially on social media. Concepts that are “backed by research” and seem scientifically grounded are often embellished with buzzwords like “microbiome” or “inflammation,” referencing studies that may lack credibility. Learn to critically evaluate sources and claims before implementing health or wellness practices. Here are a few tips to consider:
1. Check for Education
Look for professionals with credentials that speak to a solid health and nutrition science background.
2. Be Wary of Bold Claims Without Nuance
Steer away from the sources who make extreme claims without context. Health and wellness is complicated. There isn’t a “one size fits all” approach, and real experts will provide nuance and different points to consider when giving advice.
3. Look for Intellectual Humility
Reputable health and wellness experts are knowledgeable and willing to engage in open dialogue and evolve their understanding based on new evidence.
Being overloaded with information also fuels the “silver bullet” mentality. Many crave the quick fix, the one weird trick that may transform their health overnight. Additionally, the more outlandish the fad, the more media attention it gets. These often fail to deliver sustainable results, leading to frustration, disappointment, and negative self-perception. Unfortunately, this distracts us from what truly leads to lasting change: mastering the fundamentals.
The “Secret”
The key to long-term health and well-being lies in the basics – eating a balanced protein-rich diet, staying active, getting enough sleep, and managing stress. These fundamental principles are widely known and form the foundation of good health. If there were an NCAA bracket for health and wellness, these would be your #1 seeds. It’s all about maintaining a big-picture perspective and prioritizing sustainable habits. As health and nutrition expert Max Lugavere often emphasizes, “Don’t major in the minors.”
While these approaches may not get millions of views, they are the path to lasting health. Simple, right? I don’t know about you, but putting these principles into action can be easier said than done. Life gets busy, and sometimes, our healthy habits take a back seat to our responsibilities.
